Enel

Biodiversity Action Plan in the area surrounding the Fuentelsaz wind farms in the province of Guadalajara.

About the case study

Enel is developing its biodiversity action plan at the Fuentelsaz wind farms in the province of Guadalajara. Among the actions planned is land stewardship to recreate a favorable habitat for the Dupont's lark (Chersophilus duponti) through agricultural connecting corridors that are compatible with Dupont´s lark conservation. The Dupont’s lark is one of the most threatened birds in Spain and Europe due to changes in land use, livestock abandonment, and the loss of natural habitats. Considering the importance of this species, Enel´s program, developed in collaboration with other utilities in the area, is to improve the lark’s local habitat in the surroundings of the Fuentelsaz wind farms.
To improve the habitat, cereal crops have been replaced by aromatic plants, specifically lavender, within the Natura 2000 Network areas. According to the experts, this plantation will create a suitable environment for the expansion of the species and serve as an ecological corridor in the face of the fragmentation of its populations. The project also seeks to create a business model to ensure the viable and sustainable management of lavender crops as an economic driver for farmers in the area.
